I just have downloaded (and writing from it) TB 45:
http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/45.0/contrib/solaris_tarball/thunderbird-45.0.en-US.opensolaris-i386.tar.bz2
It has spellchecker enabled and working (prefs inherited from 38)
Just FYI (guess China Solaris group has contributed it)
