Hi Al,
yes the update is in its final stages, but not yet published to the public ips repo because there are still some fixes needed.
The update contains a lot of stuff: new kernel, new X11, updated pkg, updated installer, rebuilt and updated desktop components against the new stuff.
If you have time and/or test machines to check the update and help me to find issues, contact me privately, I can open a test dev pkg repo for you.
LX zones are something we absolutely want too, after this update will be ok, I will surely look into it.

just to notify we have a big update waiting, latest kernel from illumos,
updated pkg5 from OI and slim_source for installer. This is to bring
support to new devices, nvram, new high speed network (40Gb) and also to
be ready for a webrev around USB3 support.
We had to stop before publishing the update, because we discovered a
strange bug in recent code from illumos breaking shared dataset with
smbshare "guestok=true" in workgroup mode: they just stop working.
I will keep you posted, and hope to be back soon with the update.
How are you doing with this update?
Do you have any plans to introduce the Joyent/OmniOS LX zone functionality?
