<p>I had to remove first the local lightning plugin and reinstall
the plugin from the repo.</p>

Brilliant, thanks Gabriele.
For the record, I guess because I previously had installed the lightning
plugin, I had to remove Lightning, and restart Thunderbird to see the
new installed plugin.
Then I had to disable and re-enable it before thunderbird would actually
use it.
